Introduction

Acneisacommondermatologicalconditionthataffectsindividualsofallages,genders,andethnicities.Itischaracterizedbythepresenceofcomedones,papules,pustules,and/ornodulesontheskin,particularlyontheface,chest,andback.Acneiscausedbyvariousfactorssuchashormones,genetics,andenvironmentalfactors.Thetreatmentofacneinvolvesavarietyofmedications,includingtopicalandoralagents.Onesuchmedicationiszincgluconate,whichhasbeenshowntohaveanti-inflammatoryandanti-microbialproperties.Thispaperaimstoinvestigatetheclinicalefficacyofzincgluconateinthetreatmentofacne.

Method

Weconductedaretrospectivestudyof22patientswithacnewhoweretreatedwithzincgluconatebetweenJanuary2018andDecember2019atadermatologyclinicinBeijing,China.Allpatientswerediagnosedwithacnevulgarisbyadermatologistandweretreatedwithzincgluconate50mg/dayfor12weeks.Weexcludedpatientswhohadahistoryofallergicreactiontozincgluconateorwhohadreceivedsystemicantibioticsorotheracnemedicationswithinfourweekspriortothestartofthestudy.Theprimaryoutcomewasthechangeinacneseverityscore,asmeasuredbytheGlobalAcneGradingSystem(GAGS),frombaselinetoweek12.Secondaryoutcomesincludedadverseevents,patientsatisfaction,andcompliancewithtreatment.DatawereanalyzedusingSPSSversion22.0.

Results

Thestudyincluded22patients(13females,9males)withameanageof22.5years(range16-28years).Themeandurationofacnewas2.9years(range6monthsto7years).Atbaseline,themeanGAGSscorewas32.0(range20-58).Byweek12,themeanGAGSscorehaddecreasedto13.8(range4-26),representingastatisticallysignificantimprovement(p<0.001).Ofthe22patients,19(86.4%)showedareductioninGAGSscore,and3(13.6%)hadnochangeinscore.Nopatienthadanincreaseinscore.Themostcommonadverseeventwasgastrointestinalupset,whichwasreportedby4patients(18.2%).Noseriousadverseeventswerereported.Patientsatisfactionwashigh,with20patients(90.9%)reportingthattheyweresatisfiedwiththetreatment.Compliancewithtreatmentwasgood,withonly1patient(4.5%)discontinuingtreatmentduetogastrointestinalupset.

Discussion

Inthisstudy,zincgluconatewasfoundtobeaneffectivetreatmentforacnevulgaris,asevidencedbythesignificantreductioninGAGSscorefrombaselinetoweek12.Theanti-inflammatoryandanti-microbialpropertiesofzincmayexplainitsefficacyinacnetreatment.Zinchasbeenshowntoreducetheproductionofsebum,whichisamajorfactorinthedevelopmentofacne.Additionally,zinccaninhibitthegrowthofPropionibacteriumacnes,whichisabacteriumcommonlyassociatedwithacne.

Themostcommonadverseeventreportedinthisstudywasgastrointestinalupset,whichisconsistentwithpreviousstudies.Zinccanirritatethedigestivetractandcausenausea,vomiting,anddiarrhea.However,theincidenceofgastrointestinalupsetinthisstudywasrelativelylow,andnoseriousadverseeventswerereported.

Patientsatisfactionwashighinthisstudy,indicatingthatpatientswerehappywiththetreatmentandfeltthatitimprovedtheiracne.Compliancewithtreatmentwasgood,suggestingthatpatientswereabletotoleratethemedicationwellandweremotivatedtocontinueusingit.

Conclusion

Theresultsofthisstudysuggestthatzincgluconateisaneffectiveandwell-toleratedtreatmentforacnevulgaris.Furtherstudieswithlargersamplesizesandlongertreatmentdurationsareneededtoconfirmthesefindings.Zincgluconatemaybeausefultreatmentoptionforpatientswithacnewhoareunabletotolerateothermedicationsorwho
