laterbecamebitter.Twosisters,MildredHill,ateacheratakindergarten,and

Dr.PattyHill,theprincipalofthesameschool,wroteasongtogetherfor

thechildren,entitled“GoodMorningtoAll”.WhenMildredcombinedher

musicaltalentswithhersister'sknowledgeintheareaofkindergarten

education,'GoodMorningtoAll”wassuretobeasuccess.Thesister

publishedthesonginacollectionentitled“SongStoriesoftheKindergartenn

in1893.Thirty-oneyearslater,afterDr.PattyHillbecametheheadofthe

DepartmentofKindergartenEducationatColumbiaUniversity'sTeachers

College,agentlemanbythenameRobertColemanpublishedthesong,

withoutthesisters'permission.Headdedasecondpart,whichisthefamiliar

“HappyBirthdaytoYou”.Mr.ColemanJsadditionofthesecondpartmade

thesongpopularand,finally,thesisters“originalfirstpartdisappeared.

aHappyBirthdaytoYou“hadaltogetherreplacedthesisters'originalsong

“GoodMorningtoAll”.In1916PattytooklegalactionagainstMr.Coleman.

Thestoryof“HappyBirthdaytoYou“wasanice,sweetoneatthevery

beginning,butlaterturnedintoabitterone.Thereweretwosisters:onewas

MildredHill,andtheotherPattyHill.Theformerhadgreatmusicaltalents,

Austria,in1756.Beforetheageoffour,hehadshowngreatmusicaltalent.

Hisfatherthendecidedtolethimstarttakingharpsichordlessons.Theboy's

reputationasamusicaltalentgrewfast.Atfive,hewascomposingmusic.

Formthattimeon,Mozartwasperformingnconcertsandwritingmusic.By

hisearlyteens,hehadmasteredthepiano,violinandharpsichord,andwas

writingsymphoniesandoperas.HisfirstmajoroperawasperformedinMilan

in1770,whenhewasonlyfourteen.Atfifteen,Mozartbecametheconductor

foranorchestrainSalzburg.In1781,heleftforVienna,wherehewasingreat

demandasbothaperformerandacompositionteacher.Hisfirstoperawas

asuccess.Butlifewasnoteasybecausehewasapoorbusinessman,andhis

financeswerealwaysinabadstate.Hismusicfromthenextdecadewasnot

verypopular,andheeventuallyfellbackonhisteachingjobsforaliving.In

1788hestoppedperforminginpublic,preferringonlytocompose.Hedied

in1791attheageofthirty-five.Althoughhelivedonlyashortlife,he

composedover600works.
