1.1General
ThispartofIEC61158providescommonelementsforbasictime-criticalmessaging
usedtorepresentthepresenceofatime-window,withinwhichoneormorespecifiedactions
communicationsbetweendevicesinanautomationenvironment.Theterm“time-critical”is
arerequiredtobecompletedwithsomedefinedlevelofcertainty.Failuretocomplete
specifiedactionswithinthetimewindowrisksfailureoftheapplicationsrequestingthe
actions,withattendantrisktoequipment,plantandpossiblyhumanlife.
ThisstandarddefinesinanabstractwaytheexternallyvisibleserviceprovidedbytheType2fieldbusdata-linklayerintermsof:
a)theprimitiveactionsandeventsoftheservice;
b)theparametersassociatedwitheachprimitiveactionandevent,andtheformwhichtheytake;and
c)theinterrelationshipbetweentheseactionsandevents,andtheirvalidsequences.Thepurposeofthisstandardistodefinetheservicesprovidedto:
·theType2fieldbusapplicationlayerattheboundarybetweentheapplicationanddata-linklayersofthefieldbusreferencemodel;
·systemsmanagementattheboundarybetweenthedata-linklayerandsystemsmanagementofthefieldbusreferencemodel.
Type2DL-serviceprovidesbothaconnectedandaconnectionlesssubsetofthoseservicesspecifiedinISO/IEC8886.
1.2Specifications
Theprincipalobjectiveofthisstandardistospecifythecharacteristicsofconceptualdata-linklayerservicessuitablefortime-criticalcommunicationsandthussupplementtheOSIBasicReferenceModelinguidingthedevelopmentofdata-linkprotocolsfortime-criticalcommunications.Asecondaryobjectiveistoprovidemigrationpathsfrompreviously-existingindustrialcommunicationsprotocols.
ThisspecificationmaybeusedasthebasisforformalDL-Programming-Interfaces.Nevertheless,itisnotaformalprogramminginterface,andanysuchinterfacewillneedtoaddressimplementationissuesnotcoveredbythisspecification,including:
a)thesizesandoctetorderingofvariousmulti-octetserviceparameters;
b)thecorrelationofpairedrequestandconfirm,orindicationandresponse,primitives.
