There are about 56 million people in the United Kingdom. This is a big population for such a small country. But large parts of the country have few people. Most of the population is crowed into the big cities and industrial(工業(yè) ) areas. About 90% of the people live in cities and towns. Only about 10% live in the countryside. Today very few people - less than 2% of the population- are farmers and farm workers. England has the most people. About 46 million live in England. Of these , about 14 million live in London and the southeast. London is now a city of about 7 million people. Most of Scotland” s population of 5 million live in the middle part. Here are the cities and towns of the industrial area. The mountains in the north and the south have a very small population. Fewer than 3 million people live in Wales(威爾士) . Like Scotland , most of the population live in the industrial area in the south. Do you know something about tree rings (年輪 ) ? Do you know they can tell us what the weather was like, sometimes even hundreds of years ago? A tree will grow well in a climate(氣候 ) with lots of sunshine and rainfall(雨量 ). And little sunshine or rainfall will limit the growth of a tree. We can see the change of climate by study in the tree rings. For example, to find out the weather of ten years ago, count the rings of a tree from the outside to the inside. If the tenth ring is far from the eleventh ring, then we” re sure that it was sunny and rainy most of the year. If it is near to the eleventh ring, then the climate that year was bad. Tree rings are important not only for studying the history of weather but also for studying history of man. Many centuries ago there lived a lot of people at a place in New Mexico. But now you can find only sand there no tree and no people . What happened/ A scientist studied the rings of dead trees there. He found that the people had to leave because they had cut down all the trees to make fires and buildings. As all the trees had gone, the people there had to move. 1. _ in good climate. A. A. the twentieth ring B. the tenth ring C. the nineteenth ring D. the twenty-first ring 4. Why did people usually live in places with lots of trees? A. Trees could tell the change of the weather. B. Trees brought lots of sunshine and rain C. Trees could make the weather not too hot or too cold. D. Trees could be used for burning and for building houses. 5. The people had to leave the place in New Mexico _. A. because bad weather stopped the growth of trees. B. Because they no longer had water and the land became sand. C. Because they didn” t have enough trees for burning D. Because there was too much rain there. C Some good changes American schools do not have separate classes for boys and girls. If boys want to cook or to sew (縫紉 ), they can learn these skills in classes that are no longer just for girls . If girls want to repair cars or to work with wood or metal, they can now learn these things in school. Even physical education have both boys and girls in them. Most students like to have boys and girls on the same baseball team. Many boys and girls dress alike in school. They wear blue jeans and sport shirts. Some have long hair and some have short hair. Sometimes a boy has longer hair than a girl. Even the language is different. Students learn to say “ fire fighter” instead of “ fireman” (消防員 ) , “ police officer” instead of “ policeman” , and “ letter carrier” instead of “ mailman” (郵遞員 ). A person does not need to be a man to fight a fire or to deliver the mail. Most people think that these changes are good. They give all people an equal(平等 ) chance to be happy and to do what they want to do with their lives. Fathers like to tell their sons that they can grow up to be president(總統(tǒng) ). Today, mothers can tell the same thing to their daughter. 1 According to the passage, which one does not often happen in the U.S? A. A boy often learns to make a dress with girls in the same class. A. A girl often learns to make a bookshelf with boys in the same class B. A boy and a girl can both join the same baseball team. C. A boys baseball team often plays with a girls baseball team. 2 Which one is true in American schools? A. Boys all have short hair A. Girls all wear blue jeans and sport shirts. B. Boys are allowed to have long hair. C. Girls and boys wear the same dresses. 3 Why do students learn to say “ fire fighter” instead of “ fireman” A. Because “ fire fighter” sounds better than “ fireman” A. Because “ fireman” is easier than “ fire fighter” B. Because “ fire fighter” has nothing to do with sex(性別 ). C. Because men don” t want to be “ fire fighters” 4 What does “ Mothers can tell the same thing to their daughters.” mean? A. Mothers want their daughters to be president. B. Girls are able to be president. C. Fathers can” t tell the same thing to their daughters. D. Boys are no longer able to be president. 5 The good changes mentioned in the passage show that A. Boys prefer cooking meals to repairing cars. A. It is good for girls to wear blue jeans and blue shirts. B. The language is becoming more and more interesting. C. Boys and girls are equal. D The modern horse Very often young people dream not of owning a car but of having a motorcycle. They know that it takes less money to buy and to operate. With a little gasoline(汽油) they can ride for hours. Boys and girls with a motorcycle can get to where they want to go very fast. They do not have to stay behind cars when there is a lot of traffic. They can go around the cars. Motorcycles are also convenient(方便 ) to park. If there is no space on the street, people sometimes push their bikes onto the lawn(草坪 ) or leave them beside their houses. Some people like the noise almost as much as the speed. They may also feel like their grandparents did when they rode a fast horse. The motorcycle may be called the horse of modern times. Girls and boys may belong to a motorcycle club. The members of these clubs get together and ride to places like state parks or lakes. Many people have two motorcycles. They use one for the city streets and another for riding through fields. This other motorcycle is called a dirt bike. It is especially made for places where there are no roads. Because a dirt bike is not used in the city ,a person must have a truck or a trailer to take it through the streets. It is fun to have friends who also own dirt bikes. A group often goes into the country to race their bikes. If they are expert riders, they may enter a race called the Motocross, and people will pay to see them ride. Better still, they may win a trophy(獎(jiǎng)杯) . 判斷正誤,正確用 A, 表示錯(cuò)誤用 B 表示 . 1. Young people prefer a motorcycle to a car. 2 . Motorcycles can only run on the city street. 3. The motorcycle is called the horse of modern time because it looks like a horse. 4. The members of motorcycle clubs often get together and ride to places. 5. People have to pay to see Motorcross 第二卷 客觀題 (30 分 ) I. 任務(wù)型閱讀。( 10 分) Easter For many Americans Easters is the most religious (宗教 ) holiday of the year. More people go to church on Easter Sunday than at any other time of the year. Americans love all holidays and usually find a way to have fun on each of them. One thing that some people like to do is to dress up in fine , new clothes and walk with their families on one of the main street. This is called the “ Easter parade” . People like to see what others are wearing, and they also want the others to see their own fine clothes. A very old tradition on Easter is to give children a basket full of candy(糖 ).Parents often hide the basket so that the children will have the fun of looking for it. Boys and girls believe that the Easter Bunny(兔子 )brings the basket each year. The Easter Bunny is a rabbit who is as important to the children at Easter time as Santa Clause is at Christmas. Sometimes the city will have all the children come to a big park for an egg hunt. Early in the morning people who work at the park hide eggs and pieces of candy. They put them in trees, behind rocks or in other places where the children have to look for them. At Easter time Mother buys a lot of eggs. She boils(煮 ) them until they are hard. Coloring these eggs is another Easter tradition. It is a nice tradition because all the family members gather around the table to help. Having the family together is the nicest party of any holiday. 任務(wù)(一)閱讀短文,根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容回答問(wèn)題。 1What is an Easter parade? 2 What do children look for on Easter morning? 3Why do boys and girls go to the park at Easter time? 4What does mother do with the eggs she buys for Easter? 5Which is the nicest par
