1、space invadersBackground Information About the author Richard Stengel is an American editor, journalist and author and is Time magazines 16th managing editor. While best known for his work for Time, he has written a number of books including a collaboration with Nelson Mandela on Mandelas autobiogra
2、phy. Prior to taking up his role as managing editor of Time in 2006, Stengel was the president and chief executive officer of the National Constitution Center. About Time magazine Time (trademarked in capitals as TIME) is an American news magazine. An European edition (Time Europe, formerly known as
3、 Time Atlantic) is published from London. Time Europe covers the Middle East, Africa and, since 2003, Latin America. An Asian edition (Time Asia) is based in Hong Kong. As of 2009, Time no longer publishes a Canadian advertiser edition. The South Pacific edition, covering Australia, New Zealand and
4、the Pacific Islands, is based in Sydney Time is the worlds largest weekly news magazine, and has a domestic audience of 20 million and a global audience of 25 million. As of mid-2006, Richard Stengel is the managing editor. Personal spaceIs personal space important to you? Why or why not?cultural in
5、formation Personal space can be imagined as a kind of bubble surrounding a person that protects his or her privacy and which other people may not normally enter. So allowing somebody to get very close and enter your personal space may be a sign of trust or love. On the other hand, intruding others p
6、ersonal space can be rather offensive. Four kinds of personal distance between people Intimate distance: it is just 0cm to 45cm (such as relatives,close friends,lovers or couples) Personal distance: it is about 45cm to 120cm(people know eachother, but no specialy relationship.) Social distance: by a
7、bout 120cm to 360cm. Public distance: it up to 360cm away. different cultural ideas of personal space The closest distance between two people in a conversation takes place in Middle Eastern. Men usually talk to each other at very short distances.They even push and shove each other. The distance betw
8、een two people in a conversation is also very close in Latin America They commonly put a hand on their conversation partners shoulder while speaking. On the other end of the distance spectrum,Asians tend to keep much more distance between each other than Westerners do. The perception of personal spa
9、ce is very strong in Japan. Crossing between two people or intruding into anothers space to move through a crowded room is seen as ruder than in other cultures. The British keep a big distances when they talk to each other. In the United States, the accepted distance for conversation is about 18 inc
10、hes.Other factors sex people of the same sex may sit or stand closer to each other than to somebody of the opposite sex familiarity between people strangers and casual acquaintances usually need more space than friends and members of the same family who know each other well crowdedness of the situat
11、ion in a noisy street people may need to stand closer than they would normally, simply in order to hear each other. Structural analysis In the text, the writer first points out the fact that nowadays people are more concerned about themselves and want to have a larger personal space than decades ago
12、, and then he analyzes the causes of space invasion.
