Besidesmyoutdatedclothes,Iworethickglasses,hadcrossedeyes,andspokewithapersistentlisp.Forwhateverreason,Ihadneverlearnedtosaythe“s”soundproperly,andIpronouncedwordsthatbeganwith“th”asiftheybeganwitha“d.”Inaddition,becauseofmyseverelycrossedeyes,Ilackedthehandandeyecoordinationnecessarytohitorcatchflyingobjects.
Asaresult,footballs,baseballs,soccerballsandbasketballsbecamemyenemies.Iknew,beforeIsteppedonthefieldorcourt,thatIwoulddosomethingclumsyorfoolishandthateveryonewouldlaughatme.IfearedhumiliationsomuchthatIbecameskillfulatfeigningillnessestogetoutofgymclass.EventuallyIlearnedhowtogivemyselflow-gradefeverssothenursewouldwritemeanexcuse.Itworkedforawhile,untilthegymteacherscaughton.WhenIdidhavetoplay,Iwasalwaysthelastonechosentobeonanyteam.Infact,teamcaptainsdideverythingintheirpowertomaketheiropponentsgetstuckwithme.Whentheunluckyteamcaptainwasforcedtocallmyname,Iwouldtrudgeovertotheteam,knowingthatnoonetherelikedorwantedme.Forfouryears,fromsecondthroughfifthgrade,IprayednightlyforGodtogivemeschooldaysinwhichIwouldnotbeinsulted,embarrassed,ormaketofeelashamed.
Ithoughtmyprayerswereansweredwhenmymotherdecidedtomoveduringthesummerbeforesixthgrade.Themovemeantthatgottostartsixthgradeinadifferentschool,aplacewhereIhadnoreputation.AlthoughtheolderkidslaughedandsnortedatmeassoonasIgotonmynewbus--theycouldn’tmissmythickglassesandstrangeclothes--Isoondiscoveredthattherewasanotherkidwhoreceivedthebruntoftheirinsults.HisnamewasGeorge,andeveryonemadefunofhim.Thekidstauntedhimbecauseheesskinny;theybelittledhimbecausehehadacnethatpockedandblotchedhisface,andtheyteasedhimbecausehisvoicewassqueaky.Duringmyfirstgymclassatmynewschool,Iwasn’tthelastonechosenforkickball;Georgewas.
Georgetriedhardtobefriendswithme,cominguptomeinthecafeteriaonthefirstdayofschool.“Hi.Myname’sGeorge.CanIsitwithyou?”heaskedwithapeculiarsqueakinessthatmadeeachwordhigh-pitchesandraspy.AsInoddedforhimtositdown,InoticedanuncomfortablesilenceinthecafeteriaasmanyofthestudentswhohadmockedGeorge’sclumsygaitduringgymclassbeganwatchingthetwoofusandwhisperingamongthemselves.Bylettinghimsitwithme,Ihadviolatedanunspokenlawofschool,asinistercodeofchildhoodthatdemandstheremustalwaysbesomeonetopickon.Ibegantorealizetwothings.IfIbefriendedGeorge,IwouldsoonreceivethesametreatmentthatIhadgottenatmyoldschool.IfIstayedawayfromhim,Imightactuallyhaveachancetoescapebeingatthebottom.

“No,I’mnotGeorge’sfriend.Idon’tlikehim.He’sstupid,”Iblurtedout.Severalkidssnickeredandmumbledundertheirbreath.Chrisstaredatmeforafewsecondsandthenthrewmetotheground.
“Wimp.Where’sGeorge?”hedemanded,standingoverme.SomeonepointedtoGeorgesittingaloneontopofthemonkeybarsaboutthirtyyardsfromwherewewere.Hewaswatchingme.ChrisandhisfollowerssprintedovertoGeorgeandyankedhimoffthebarstotheground.Althoughthemobquicklyencircledthem,Icouldstillseethetwoofthematthecenterofthecrowd,lookingateachother.Georgeseemedstoic,staringstraightthroughChris.Iheardthefamiliarchantof“Go,Chris,go!”andwatchedashisfistsbeganslammingintoGeorge’sheadandbody.Hisfacebloodiedandhisnosebroken,Georgecrumpledtothegroundandsobbedwithouteventhrowingapunch.Themobcheeredwithpleasureanddartedoffintotheplaygroundtoavoidanapproachingteacher.

Intheyearsthatfollowed.George’ssilentstareremainedwithme.ItwasthereineighthgradewhenIsawagangofpopularkidsbeatupsixth-graderbecause,theysaid,hewas“uglyandstupid.”Itwastheremyfirstyearinhighschool,whenIsawagroupofolderkidsstealanotherfreshman’sclothesandthrowthemintotheshowers.Itwasthereayearlater,whenIwatchedseveralseniorspressawadofchewinggumintothehairofanewgirlonthebus.EachtimethatIwitnessedanotherawkward,uncomfortable,scaredkidbeingtormented,IthoughtofGeorge,andgraduallyhishauntingstarebegantospeaktome.Nolongersilent,ittoldmethateverychildwhoispickedonandtaunteddeservesbetter,thatnoone--nomatterhowbig,strong,attractiveorpopular--hastherighttoabuseanotherperson.
Finally,inmyjunioryearwhenaloudmouthed,pink-skinnedbullynamedDonaldbeganpickingontwofreshmenonthebus,IcouldnolongerdenyGeorge.DonaldwascrumplingalargewadofpaperandpreparingtobounceitoffthebackoftheheadofoneoftheyoungstudentswhenIinterruptedhim.
“Leavethemalone,Don,”Isaid.BythenIwassixinchestallerand,aftertwoyearsofhigh-schoolwrestling,thirtypoundsheavierthanIhadbeeninmyfreshmanyear.ThoughDonaldwasstilltwoyearsthanme,hewasn’tmuchbigger.Hestoppedwhathewasdoing,squintedandstaredme.
“What’syourproblem,Paul?”
IfeltthewayIhadmanyyearsearlierontheplaygroundwhenIwatchedthemobofkidsbegantosurroundGeorge.
“Justleavethemalone.Theyaren’tbotheringyou,”Irespondedquietly.
“What’sittoyou?”hechallenged.Aglimpseofmyownpast,ofrowingthebus,ofbeingmockedformyclothes,mylisp,myglasses,andmyabsentfatherflashedinmymind.
“Justdon’tmesswiththem.That’sallIamsaying,Don.”Myfingertipsweretingling.Thebuswassilent.Hegotupfromhisseatandleanedoverme,andIrosefrommyseattofacehim.Foraminute,bothofusjuststoodthere,withoutaword,staring.
“I’mjustplayingwiththem,Paul,”hesaid,chucking.“Youdon’thavetogopsychoonmeoranything.”Thenheshookhishead,slappedmefirmlyonthechestwiththebackofhishand,andsatdown.Butheneverthrewthatwadofpaper.Fortherestoftheyear,wheneverIwasonthebus,Donandtheothertroublemakerswerenoticeablyquiet.
