industry,havenotonlysurvivedbutoftenreturnedtoprofit.Notthe20%profitmarginsthatwere

routineafewyearsago,butprofitallthesame.

Ithasnotbeenmuchfiin.Manypapersstayedafloatbypushingjournalistsoverboard.The

AmericanSocietyofNewsEditorsreckonsthat13,500newsroomjobshavegonesince.Readers

arepayingmoreforslimmerproducts.Somepapersevenhadthenervetorefusedeliveryto

distantsuburbs.Yetthesedesperatemeasureshaveprovedtherightonesand,sadlyformany

journalists,theycanbepushedfurther.
