Inmuchoftheworldthereisthesignofcrisis.GermanandBrazilianpapershaveshrugged
offtherecession.EvenAmericannewspapers,whichinhabitthemosttroubledcomeoftheglobal
industry,havenotonlysurvivedbutoftenreturnedtoprofit.Notthe20%profitmarginsthatwere
routineafewyearsago,butprofitallthesame.
Ithasnotbeenmuchfiin.Manypapersstayedafloatbypushingjournalistsoverboard.The
AmericanSocietyofNewsEditorsreckonsthat13,500newsroomjobshavegonesince.Readers
