questionnaireswerecompletedprimarilybyrespondentsofMexicanAmerican,AfricanAmericanandEuropean

Americandescent.Theirmathsandlanguageartsgradeswerealsoobtained.

Theirfindingsshowhowfatherscansupporttheirteenagersinwaysthatresultingreateroptimism,self-

confidence,and,ultimately,higherachievementatschool.

Thesepositiveeffectsextendtobothsonsanddaughters,whileindifferentways.Expcricncingtheirfather's

warmthfirstinfluencesdaughters'senseofoptimism,andthenspillsoverintotheirfeelingmoredeterminedand

certainabouttheiracademicabilities.Thisinturnleadstobettermathgrades.Thereisamoredirectlinkbetween

theirfathers'involvementandteenageboys'beliefintheirabilitytosucceedontheacademicfront.Thisstrengthen
