IfirstreadJaneEyreineighthgradeandhavereaditeveryfewyearssince.Itisoneofmyfavoritenovels,andsomuchmorethanagothicromancetome,althoughthatshowIprobablywouldhavedefineditatage13.Ihavealwaysbeenstruck,hauntedinaway,bythecharacters-JaneandMr.Rochester.TheytakeonnewdeptheverytimeImeetthem…andtheirsisalovestoryfortheages.

CharlotteBrontesfirstpublishednovel,andhermostnotedwork,isasemi-autobiographicalcoming-of-agestory.Janeisplain,poor,aloneandunprotected,butduetoherfierceindependenceandstrongwillshegrowsandisabletodefysocietysexpectationsofher.Thisisdefinitelyfeministliterature,publishedin1847,waybeforethebeginningofanyfeministmovement.Perhapsthisisoneofthereasonswhythenovelhashadsuchawidefollowingsinceitfirstcameonthemarket.Itisalsooneofthefirstgothicromancespublishedanddefinesthegenre.

JaneEyre,whoisournarrator,wasbornintoapoorfamily.HerparentsdiedwhenshewasasmallchildandthelittlegirlwassenttolivewithherUncleandAuntReedatGateshead.JanesUncletrulycaredforherandshowedhisaffectionopenly,butMrs.Reedseemedtohatetheorphan,andneglectedherwhileshepamperedandspoiledherownchildren.ThisunfairtreatmentemphasizedJanesstatusasanunwantedoutsider.Shewasoftenpunishedharshly.OnoneoccasionhernastycousinJackpickedafightwithher.JanetriedtodefendherselfandwaslockedintheterrifyingRedRoomasaresult.JanesUncleReedhaddiedinthisroomalittlewhilebefore,andMrs.Reedknewhowfrightenedshewasofthechamber.SinceJaneisthenarrator,thereaderisgivenafirst-handimpressionofthechildsfeelings,herheightenedemotionalstateatbeingimprisoned.Indeed,sheseemsalmostlikeanhystericalchild,filledwithterrorandrage.Sherepeatedlycallsherconditioninlifeunjustandisfilledwithbitterness.LookingintothemirrorJaneseesadistortedimageofherself.Sheviewsherreflectionandseesastrangelittlefigure,ortinyphantom.Janehasnotlearnedyettosubordinateherpassionstoherreason.Herpassionsstilleruptunchecked.HerisolationintheRedRoomisapresentimentofherlaterisolationfromalmosteverysocietyandcommunity.Thispowerful,beautifullywrittensceneneverfailstomoveme.

Mrs.ReeddecidedtosendJaneawaytotheLowoodSchool,apoorinstitutionrunbyMr.Brocklehurst,whobelievedthatsufferingmadegrandpeople.Allthechildrentherewereneglected,excepttoreceiveharshpunishmentwhenanymistakewasmade.AtLowood,JanemetHelenBurns,ayoungwomanalittleolderthanJane,whoguidedherwithvision,lightandlovefortherestofherlife.Janesneedforlovewassogreat.Itreallybecomesobviousinthisfirstfriendship.Helenlaterdiedfromfever,inJanesarms.Herillnessanddeathcouldhavebeenavoidedifmoreattentionhadbeenpaidtotheyouths.JanestayedatLowoodfortenyears,eightasastudentandtwoasateacher.Tiredanddepressedbyhersurroundings,JaneappliedforthepositionofgovernessandfoundemploymentatThornfield.ThemansionisownedbyagentlemannamedEdwardFairfaxRochester.Herjobtherewastoteachhisward,anadorablelittleFrenchgirl,Adele.Overalongperiodthemoody,inscrutableRochesterconfidesinJaneandsheinhim.Thetwoformanunlikelyfriendshipandeventuallyfallinlove.Again,Janesneedforlovecomestothefore,asdoesherpassionatenature.Sheblooms.Adark,gothicfigure,RochesteralsohasaheartfilledwiththehopeoftrueloveandfuturehappinesswithJane.Ironically,hehasbroughtallhismisery,pastandfuture,onhimself.

AllisnotasitseemsatThornfield.Thereisastrange,ominouswomanservant,GracePoole,wholivesandworksinanatticroom.Shekeepstoherselfandisrarelyseen.Fromthefirst,however,Janehassensedbizarrehappeningsatnight,wheneveryoneisasleep.TherearewildcriesalongwithviolentattemptsonRochesterslifebyaseeminglyunknownperson.JanewonderswhynooneinvestigatesMrs.Poole.ThenastrangemanvisitsThornfieldandmysteriouslydisappearswithMr.Rochester.LatethatnightJaneisaskedtositwiththemanwhilethelordofthehouseseeksadoctorshelp.Themanhasbeenseriouslywoundedandisweakfromlossofblood.Heleavesbycoach,inasorrystate,firstthinginthemorning.Janesquestionsarenotanswereddirectly.Thisvisitwillhavedireconsequencesonallinvolved.AnexplosivesecretrevealedwilldestroyallthejoyfulplansthatJaneandRochesterhavemade.Jane,oncemorewillfacepovertyandisolation.

CharlotteBrontesheroineJaneEyre,maynothavebeengracedwithbeautyormoney,butshehadaspiritoffireandwasfilledwithintegrityandasenseofindependence-charactertraitsthatneverwanedinspiteofalltheoppressionsheencounteredinlife.Ms.BrontebringstotheforeinJaneEyresuchissuesas:therelationsbetweenmenandwomeninthemid-19century,womensequality,thetreatmentofchildrenandofwomen,religiousfaithandhypocrisy(andthedifferencebetweenthetwo),therealizationofselfhood,andthenatureofloveandpassion.Thisisapowerhouseofanovelfilledwithromance,mysteryandpassions.Itisatoncestartlinglyfreshandaportraitofthetimes.Ms.Brontewillmakeyourheartbeatfaster,yourpulseraceandyoureyesfillwithtears.

Itseemstomethatmanyreaders’EnglishreadingexperiencestartswithJaneEyer.Iamofnoexception.AswerefertothemovieJaneEyer,itisnotsurprisingtofindsomedifferencesbecauseofitsbeingfilmizedandretoldinanewway,butthespiritofthenovelremainstobeanindependentperson,bothphysicallyandmentally.

JaneEyerwasabornresister,whoseparentswentoffwhenshewasveryyoung,andheraunt,theonlyrelativeshehad,treatedherasbadlyasaragtag.SinceJane’seducationinLowwoodOrphanagebegan,shedidn’tgetwhatshehadbeenexpectingsimplybeingregardedasacommonperson,justthesameasanyothergirlaround.ThesuffersfrombeinghumiliatedanddevastatedteachJanetobeperseveringandprizedignityoveranythingelse.Asarewardofrevoltingtheruthlessoppression,JanegotachancetobeatutorinThornfieldGarden.ThereshemadetheacquaintanceoflovelyAdeleandthatgarden’sowner,Rochester,amanwithwarmheartdespiteacoldfaceoutside.Janeexpectedtochangethelifefromthenon,butfatehaddecidedotherwise:AfterJaneandRochesterfellinlovewitheachotherandgotdowntogetmarry,sheunfortunatelycametoknowinfactRochesterhadgotalegalwife,whoseemedtobetheshadowfollowingRochesterandledtohismoodinessallthetimeRochesterwasalsoadespairingpersoninneedofsalvation.Janedidwanttogivehimahand,however,shemadeuphermindtoleave,becauseshedidn’twanttobetrayherownprinciples,becauseshewasJaneEyer.Thefilmhasfinallygotasymbolistend:Janeinheritedalargenumberoflegaciesandfinallyreturned.AfterfindingRochester’smisfortunebroughtbyhisoriginalmadwife,Janechosetostaywithhimforever.

Idon’tknowwhatothersfeel,butfranklyspeaking,IwouldratherregardthesectionthatJanebeganherteachingjobinThornfieldasthefilm’sendespeciallywhenIheardJane’swordsNeverinmylifehaveIbeenawakensohappily.Foronething,thisidealandbrand-newbeginningoflifewaswhatJanehadbeenimaginingforlongasasufferingperson;foranother,thisshouldbewhattheaudienceswithmyviewshopedhertoget.Buttheprofessionaljudgmentofproducingfilmsremindedmetowaitforatotallydifferentresult:Theremustbesomethingwrongcomingwiththeexcellenceperhapsnotonlyshouldanothersectionbeaddedtoenrichthestory,butalsowemayseefromthenexttransitionofJane’slifethatLifeislikeaboxofchocolates,youneverknowwhatyouwouldget.(ByForrestGump’smother,inthefilmForrestGump)

What’smore,thisfilmdidn’tendwhenJaneleftThornfield.ForJaneEyerherself,thereshouldalwaysbesomewheretorealizehergreatidealofbeingindependentconsideringherfortitude,butforRochester,howhecangetsalvation?Thefilmgivestheanswertentatively:JaneeventuallygotbacktoRochester.Infact,whenJanemetRochesterforthefirsttime,shescaredhishorseandmadehisheelstrained,toacertainextent,whichmeantRochesterwouldgetretrievalbecauseofJane.WecanconsiderRochester’sexperiencesasthatofreligionmeaning.Thefirebyhisfranticwifewasthepunishmentforthecynicismearlyinhislife.Afterit,RochestergotthemercyoftheGodandtheloveofthewomanwhomheloved.Herewecansay:humannatureandpinitygetunitedperfectlyinordertoletsuchastoryaccordwiththerequirementsofbothtwosides.Thevalueofthisfilmmaybeduetoitseffortstoexploreanewwayforthedevelopmentofhumanismunderthefaithofreligion.

Lifeisceaselesslychanging,butourlivingprinciplesremain.Firmlypersistingfortherightsofbeingindependentgivesusenoughconfidenceandcourage,whichislikethebeaconoverthecapricciososeaoflife.Intheworldofthefilm,wehavefoundthestoriesofourselves,whichmakesussoconcernedaboutthefateofthedramatispersonae.

Inthiseraofrapidsocialandtechnologicalchangeleadingtoincreasinglifecomplexityandpsychologicaldisplacement,bothphysicalandmentaleffectsonuscallforabalance.WearelikelytofindourselvesboggeddownintheSargassoSeaofinformationoverloadandlivingunconsciousness.It’sourspiritthatmakesthelifemeaningful.

Wehavegoodreasontobeshocked——deprivedoffamilyhappinessfromanearlyage,withneitherbeautynorwealthtospeakof,JaneEyreseemstobeneverdestinedtobecometheheroineshininginthespotlightweoftenreadaboutinromances——butistherereallysuchathingcalleddestiny?AtleastJanedoesn’tthinkso.Sheisnotpretty;sheisnotrich;sheisamereordinarygoverness,sowhat?Asaninpidualhumanexistence,shehasdignityaswellasanyoneelse,soshedeservesthechancetoloveandtobelovedaswellasanyoneelse!Despitehershort,delicatebody,hersoulisnottheleastweakerthanothers’——evengreaterthanmostofthem.ThemomentshesaidthethreepowerfulwordstoMr.Rochesterproudlyandsteadily,herpalefacemusthavebeensparklingwithsacredness,whichwouldhavemadeherthemostbeautifulwomanever,becausethebeautyofindependenceiseternal.Withthisspiritofindependenceshenotonlygainedherselflove,respectandhappinessbutalsoprovedtotheworldthatnobodyissecondclass——unlessyoubelieveyourselftobe.

Hundredsofthousandsofordinarygirlsthatusuallygetneglectedinlife——meincluded——loveandadmireJanedeeplybecausesheinspiresandencouragesustostriveforourlifegoalsagainstalloddsbravely.Sheisarolemodel,anidolinourheartsbutatthesametimeafriend,abigsisternextdoorwho’snotatallcoldanddistant,alwaysreadyandwillingtostandbyoursidewheneverweareintrouble.EverytimewhenIfeelinferior,puzzledandlosefaithinmyselfandthestrengthtocarryonthelifepathalreadychosen,Jane,mydearfriend’sdeterminedfaceandforcefulwordsonthatserenesummernightwouldemergeinsidemymind,whichneverfailedtorelightmyfireofpassion.Oh,howIlongtobelikeher.

Butit’snotthatItotallybelieveinherlifestory,bywhichImeanIdon’tthinkthestoryofherscanhappentoanybody.Tome,it’ssomewhatlikeafairytalethatbeginswith‘longlongago’andendswith‘everafter’,inwhichtheprinceandprincess,thoughhavingsufferedmuchintheprocessofgettingtogether,wouldalwaysendupinaharmoniousmarriageandenjoyallthebestlifehastooffer.Beinganobscuregirlherself,theauthorCharlotteBrontewassogenerousastohaveprovidedourdearJaneaMr.Rochesterwholovesherjustthewaysheis,appreciatesheruniquecharacterandakindheartedfamily(laterprovedtobeherrelatives)thattookherinwhenshewashelplessandofferedherajobtosupportherself.Inreality,noteveryJaneEyrecanmeettheproperpeopleattherighttime,justasnoteveryuglyducklingcanturnintoagracefulswan——itmaydependonamatterofluck.Ifyouaretooobsessedwithfairytales,youareverylikelytofeeldisappointedanddeceivedbythenot-so-perfecteverydaylife.Butwhatarefairytalesfor?Welovetoreadthemandwetendtobelieveinthemeventhoughweknowtheyarenotreal.Sometimeswedoneedalittleromanticdaydreamasseasoningsintheroutineoflife,andwealsoneedanidealtobelievein,acreedtoliveby,andanorthernstartoshowusdirectionsonthelongjourney.

That’smaybewhatJaneEyreisfor——itgivesnumerouscommongirlsapossibilitytolookforwardto,alifetoreachfor,andaboveall,apositiveattitudetofacealloddstoencounter.Perhapswecan’tallhaveherluck,butwecanhaveherindependence,confidence,persistence,thecourageofstandinguptofightforourselvesagainstthoseseeminglytallerthanus,andthefaiththatwecanfinallywinbecauseWEAREEQUAL.

JaneEyrefromparents,dependonothers,sufferingfrombullying.Later,shewenttotheorphanage,afrienddidnot,thedeanisverybad,sheletJanelovetowipethetable,moppingthefloor,alittletouched,shewillcallJaneeyre.JaneEyresufferedallkindsofhardships.JanelaterbecameagoodfriendwithalittlegirlnamedHelen,butafewyearslater,Helendiedofafatalillness.Janewasverysadandshehadnofriends.
