IntroduceabouttheauthorCharlesDickensHistoricalBackgroundofOliverTwistTalkaboutliteraryappreciationofOlivertwistCoincidencesembodyDickens'radicalideasAnalyzeseveralmovieversions.ShowseveralmaincharactersandevaluaterolesPlotofsummaryMajorthemeandsymbols.CommentsonmovieCharlesDickensCharlesDickens(1812~1870)wasborninapoorfamilyinthesouthofEngland.Hehadtomakealivingindependentlyjustattheageoften.Atageofsixteen,heworkedasareporterinanewspaperoffice.HeinsistedongoingtotheBritishMuseumtostudybymeansofself-study.Atageof25,hehaspublishedtheworksSketchesandThePickwickPapers,whichmadehimbecomefamousovernight.Inthefollowing34years,hissuccessasanovelistcontinuedproducingOliverTwist(1837-1839),HardTimes(1854)andATaleofTwoCities(1859)andsoon.

HeisoneofthegreatestcriticalrealistwritersoftheVictorianAge.Heexposedinhisworksthepoverty,injustice,hypocrisyandcorruptnessofsociety.Withstrikingforceandtruthfulness,hecreatedpicturesofbourgeoiscivilization,describingthemiseryandsufferingsofthecommonpeople.Heisthefounderofcriticalrealisticliteratureinthe19thcentury.ClaimtofameBackgroundEnglandinthe1830swasrapidlyundergoingatransformationfromanangriculturl,ruraleconomytoanurban,industrialnation.

IntheextremelystratifiedEnglandclassstructure,thehighestsocialclassbelongedtothe"gentleman",anaristocratwhodidnothavetoworkforhisliving.Themiddleclasswasstigmatizedforhavingtowork,andso,toalleviatethestigmaattachedtomiddle-classwealth,themiddleclasspromotedworkasamoralvirtue.Themiddle-class'svaluesystemtransformedearnedwealthintoasignofmoralvirtue.VictoriansocietyinterpretedeconomicsuccessasasignthatGodfavoredthehonest,moralvirtueofthesuccessfulindividual'sefforts,andthus,interpretedtheconditionofpovertyasasignoftheweaknessofthepoorindividual.In1830sEngland,thewealthdeterminedvotingrights.Therefore,thepoorhadnosayinthelawsthatgovernedtheirlives,andthePoorLawsstrictlyregulatedtheabilitytoseekrelief.Sincebeggingwasillegal,workhousesweremadetobedeliberatelyunpleasantinnordertodiscouragethepoorfromseekingtheirrelief.Thestatechosetorecognizetheirexistenceonlywhentheycommitedcrimes,died,orenteredtheworkhouses.OliverTwistwasthesecondlongnovelofCharlesDickens.Inthisnovel,Dickensmercilesslyexposedthedarknessandhypocrisyofthebourgeoissociety.Hedescribedthelifeofpoorchildrenofthecaptalistsocietyandrevealedthedarknessofeducationwithapurposetohelpthelowerstrataofthesociety.LiteraryAppreciationof"OliverTwist"Asthechildheroofamelodramaticnovelofsocialprotest,OliverTwistismeantoappealmoretooursentimentsthantoourliterarysensibilities.Onmanylevels,Oliverisnotabelievablecharacter,becausealthoughheisraisedincorruptsurroundings,hispurityandvirtueareabsolute.Throughoutthenovel,DickensusesOliver'scharactertochallengetheVictorianideathatpaupersandcriminalsarealreadyevilatbirth,arguinginsteadthatacorruptenvironmentisthesourceofvice.Atthesametime,Oliver'sincorruptibilityunderminessomeofDickens'sassertions.OliverisshockedandhorrifiedwhenheseetheArtfulDodgerandCharleyBatespickastranger'spocketandagainwhenheisforcedtoparticipateinaburglary.Oliver'smoralscruplesaboutthesancityofpropertyseeminbornhim,justasDickens'sopponentsthoughtthatcorruptionisinborninpoorpeople.CoincidencesembodyDickens'radicalideasOliverisbornofadyingmotherinaparishworkhouseandthensenttoaninfantfarm.Untilheisnineyearsold,heisthenreturnedtotheworkhouseagainwhereheisstarvedandabused.Wherethereisoppression,there'srebelling.Youngandphysicallyweakasheis,Oliverismentallpowerfulandbraveenoughtoadvancetothemasterand"askformoregruel"onbehalfofthegroup.Intheundertaker's,hefightsforhismother'sdignitywithNoahClaypolewhooffendshislatemother,thoughheispaysgreatcostforit.LaterherunsawaytoLondonalonetoseekfornewlife.Meetingchallengesbroughtaboutbymiseryfate,andrebellingagainsttheevilforce-aretheconditionsforhimtohappentomeetMr.Brownlow,whichserveasDickens'generalpurposeofarrangingcoincidences.Hemadeitclearthatnomatterhowtragicyourlotis,nomatterhowhardyourlifebecomes,theunfortunatewillcertainlygethelpfromgood.Differentmovieversions1909AmericanfilmandwasthefirstadaptationofOliverTwistevermadedirectedbyJ.StuartBlackton.1912BritishsilentdramafilmdirectedbyThomasBentley.1922silentfilmDirectedbyFrankLloyd.1948isdirected

Unlikethenovel,inwhichNancymeetsOliverthedayafterhearrivesatFagin'sandhersympathyfortheboyisimpliedearlyinthestory,sheandOliverdonotevenmeetinthefilmuntilshehelpstokidnaptheboy;andalthoughshedefendshimfromFagin'sangerafterthekidnapping,Oliverseemstostillbeunawareofanyrealconcernshemayhaveforhimuntillateinthefilm,whenheleaveswithSikestocommittheburglary.WhilewrappingascarfaroundOliver'sneckpriortohisleaving,shemomentarilytoucheshischeektosilentlyreassurehim,andhelooksbackatherinsurpriseasSikespusheshimoutthedoor.OliverisnevershowndisplayinganyfeelingsforNancyonewayortheother.OliverisnotMr.brownlow'sdaughterinsteadofhisfriend's.CharactersOliverTwist:Theprotagonistofthestory.Heisanorphanborninaworkhouse.Hewasabusedasayoungchild.Hestillremainsthenatureofgoodnessevensufferedoppressiveaffliction.

Ithinktherearetwoplotswhichareverytypical.OneisthatwhenhewastakenbyMr.Brownlowtohishome,Mr.Brownlow’sfriendsaidtwiceaboutOliverisathiefandliar.WhenOliverpromisedMr.Brownlowtoreturnbooks,buthewasnotcomeback.WhileMr.Brownlowstillbelievesinhim.Howvaluableofthistrust!AnotheristhatheprayedforFagineventhoughFaginisgreed,crazyandforcehimtosteal.OliverstillhavemercywithFagin.Nancy:Sheisathiefinherchildhood.Sheplungedintosteal.Nancyasacontroversialcharacter.Thoughshewasnotenoughtogetridoftherobbers,shestillsympathizedwithOliver'sfateandsacrificedforrescuingOliver.
