You'reheadedtosomeofthemostprestigiousuniversitiesandyou'veearnedthehonorofbecomingaPresidentialScholar,butyoudidn'tdoitalone-theteachersyouhonortonighthavetaughtyouhistory,calculusandbiology.AndIdaresay,they'vetaughtyousomethingaboutyourself.

Dr.MarlinKemmerhashelpedMinaKimesrealizeshewantstobeawriter.Minasaidofhermostinfluentialteacher,"IfirmlybelievethatDr.Kemmer'sguidancehasenabledmetomatureasawriter.Enteringmyfreshmanyear,Ineverevenconsideredwritingoutsideofschool.IamextremelythankfultohaveDr.Kemmerasateacher.ItisunlikelythatIwouldhavefoundwhatItrulybelievetobemycallinginlife."AndforMatthewSpencer,histeacherMr.JeffreyDilkshasinspiredhimtostudyphysicsandtoapplyhispassionforlearninginlife.Matthewsaid,"Mr.DilkstriestoconvinceustothinklikescientistsandasaresultIhavebeguntothinkmorecriticallyabouteverythingfromscientifictheoriestothewayIlivemylife."

TeacherslikeDr.KemmerandMr.Dilkshelpstudentsdeveloptheskillstheyneedforalifetimeoflearningandalifetimeofpossibility.Teachingistheabsoluteprofession,theonethatmakesallotherspossible.AsteacherGregKorshavn,ChalmersWang'sfavoriteteachersaid,"Teachingisabouttouchinglives."

Thinkaboutthisawesomeprivilegeforjustamoment.Therearefewprofessionswhereyoucanseetheimpactofyourworksovividly.Therearen'tmanyjobswhereheroandbestfriend,andsometimesevensurrogatemomordadispartofthejobdescription.ForBetsyScherzerherteacher,Mrs.JayneHobgoodisjustthat.Betsysaid,"Mrs.H.ismorethanjustanexceptionalteacherandclubsponsortome.ShewasmysurrogatemomandIwasthedaughtersheneverhad.Webondedoverbooks,drama,creativewriting,chocolate,younameit."

Therearefewcareersthathavesuchalastingeffectonanentiregenerationandanentirenation.Teachersfillchildren'sliveswithhope,learningandlove-notjustonschooldays,buteverydayoftheirlives.ThisiswhatMr.CuadradohasdoneforCorinMcLean.

Asteachersinspirestudents,theyalsochallengethemwithagentlemixofauthorityandencouragement.ThisiswhatMr.MuilenburghasdoneforKristinLee.WhenKristin'sfriendslearnedthatshehadMr.Muilenburgforhonorschemistry,theysaid,"Ohman,youbettergetaschedulechange."ButKristindidn'tandshefoundthatoneofthetoughestteachersatCityHighSchoolinIowaCitywasalsothebest.Kristinsaid,"IlookedforwardtochemistryeverydaybecauseIknewourmindswouldbeengagedandourhandswouldbeactive.Mr.Muilenburgteachesusbeyondthetextbook,hechallengesuswithdeepquestions...anddemandswestriveforexcellence."

Iknowhowrewardingandchallengingteachingcanbeandwhataremarkabledifferenceateachercanmakeinachild'slife.WhenIwasonlyeightyearsoldImadeaverymatureandaverywisedecision-Idecidedtobeateacher.IdecidedthisnotonlybecauseIlovedschoolandwritingonthechalkboard.IwantedtoteachbecauseIlovedmysecond-gradeteacher,Mrs.GnagyandIwantedtobejustlikeher.SoIwenttocollegeandearnedateachingdegree,andafterworkingasateacherinDallas,IgainedawholenewrespectforMrs.Gnagy.ButIlovedeveryminuteofit.

我知道教學(xué)可以多么有意義，多么富有挑戰(zhàn)性，一個(gè)老師可以對(duì)一個(gè)孩子一生帶來(lái)多大的不同。我8歲時(shí)做了一個(gè)非常成熟、非常明智的決定---決定做一名教師。我做出這個(gè)決定，不僅僅因?yàn)槲覠釔?ài)學(xué)校，喜歡在黑板上寫(xiě)字，我想當(dāng)老師還因?yàn)槲覑?ài)我的二年級(jí)老師---娜潔太太，我希望做像她一樣的老師。所以我上了大學(xué)，獲得了教學(xué)學(xué)位。在達(dá)拉斯當(dāng)了老師后，我對(duì)娜潔太太更產(chǎn)生了全新的敬意。我喜歡教學(xué)的每時(shí)每刻。

Everyteacherherehasmanyreasonsforteaching,butonereasoneveryteachersharesisaloveforchildren.

Seeingachild'seyesbrightenwithunderstandingisanexperiencethatdefiesdescription-butonethateveryteachercanunderstand.

Andwhilestudentslearnfromtheirteachers,teacherslearnjustasmuchfromstudents.JustaskWesleyGreenblatt'sfavoriteteacher,JeanieWilliams,whohasbeenteachingandlearningfromstudentsfornineteenyears.Jeaniesaid,"Ifintelligencewerecontagious,Iwouldsurelybeprofoundlybrilliantbynow.Iaminspiredbythestudents'enthusiasmforlearning,energizedbytheirinsatiablecuriosity,andencouragedbytheirpotentialtalent."

WeareallencouragedbythepotentialofourPresidentialScholars.AndIhopethatsomeofyouwillconsideracareerinteachinglikeXiaoWang,whowasinspiredbyhisteacherMr.Rockwood.Xiaosaid,"WhenIwaspreparingforcompetitionlastyear,hevolunteeredhistimeduringhisvacationtoworkwithme.Itisthatkindofdedicationandspiritthathasinspiredme...tobecomeateacher.IwishthatIcanwakeupandbeasexcitedtoattendworkasheis.IwishthatIcanmeet200youngpeoplewhoadoremeandsoakupallIcanteachthem.IcannotwaittomakemyimpactonsocietyandthatdesireisstronglyduetotheteachingsofMr.DennisRockwood."
