WhatisgoodFamilyEducation

Educationisakindofactivitythatbaseoncultivatingtalents,especiallyfamilyeducation.NowIwanttotalkabouttheFamilyEducation.

Whatisfamilyeducation?--Familyeducationisthefirstlessonforchildren,whichwillberememberedforever.Withthecompetitionofsocietyisbecomingmoreandmorefierce,mostofparentsstarttopaymuchmoreattentiontofamilyeducationintheeducationprojects,theywanttosearchbetterwaystoeducatetheirchildren.Andtherearemanytypesoffamilyeducationstylesinthisworld,ifwewanttofindbetterwaysoffamilyeducation,weshouldfirstlyhaveadeepunderstandingofthat.NowIwanttotalkabouttwoclassicalfamilyeducation,ChinesefamilyeducationVSAmericanfamilyeducation.

Whentalkingaboutthefamilyeducation,wewillhavetoconsidertheparents,becausetheyaretheimportantexecutorsandteachersaroundus.

AlotofparentsinChinaonlycareaboutwhetherthechildrencanhaveapromisingfuture,agoodjob,agoodlifeornot.Sotheirmajorconceptofeducationispushingtheirchildrentostudyhardforenteringagoodhigherschoolandfamousuniversity.Iftheirchildrencanadmitagoodcollege,theywillfeelveryproud.Ifnot,hewillfeelsadandashamedoffacingrelatives.Sotheywillnotletchildrendoanythingexceptstudying.Andtheyfocusreputationineducatingthechildrenusually.Educatingthechildrentobecomeausefulpersonistheirachievement,butifnot,theparentswillfeelshameful.

Incontrast,Americanparentspaymuchattentiontotraintheirchildrentohavetheabilityforadaptingtoenvironmentalvarietyandtheabilityoflivingindependentlybuttheydonotforcechildrentostudy,however,theywillgivemuchfreespaceandtimetochildrenfordevelopingtheinterests.Sotheyrespectkids’willingnessandallowthemtochooseuniversityaccordingtotheirinterest,insteadoftaking“famousortopcollege”asthedecisionfactor.

Whytheyaresodifferent?–BecauseforChineseparents,thechildrenaretheirhope,sotheythinkchildrenshouldhaveabrightfuture.AndbecauseofthebigpopulationinChina,thefiercecompetitionoccurswhenchildrenenterschool.Soparentswanttheirchildrenputalltheenergyonstudy.Andtheparentswilldoeverythingtheycantohelptheirchildren.Theywanttocreateasgoodconditionsaspossiblesothatthechildrenwillnotworryaboutanythinginthefuture.Underthissituation,childrenhavetosuffersomestrictrequirementsfromparentswhichcouldnotberefused.

Inthefilm《GuaShaTreatment》,thereisascenethatDatongaskedhissontoapologizetohisboss’ssonwhenhissawhissonwasfightingwithhisboss’sson.What’smore,heslappedhissoninthefacewhenhissonrefusedtoapologize,whichgavehisbossaquiteashock.Hisbossbecameconfusedwhythefatherwouldshowtheregretbystrikinghisson.Thissceneandtheboss’sconfusionreflectthedifferentconceptsbetweenthetwocountries.TraditionalChinesefamilyeducationemphasizekindheartednessandobedience,sowecansaythatChineseparentslikeDatonginthefilmalwayswanttomodeltheirchildren.Onthecontrary,Americanchildrenhavemorerightsofautonomybecausetheirparentsemphasisonjusticeandfreedomintheprocessoffamilyeducation.

Baseonthese,theparentsmostlyarethetopmastersinfamily,theygivetheordersandchildrenreceiveorders.Childrencouldnothaveanypersonalideastodisagreeorquestionparents’orders,andeventhough,parentswillmakealldecisionsfortheirchildrenandarrangeallthethings.Childrenonlycandoaremechanicallyobey.Theparentsareliketheoppressorandchildrenareliketheoppressed.Itindirectlymakesfamilyeducationbecomebankingconcepteducationandwillmakechildrenbecomeautomations.ItislikePauloFreiresaid:“Thebankingconceptofeducation,whichservestheinterestsofoppression,isalsonecrophilic.Basedonamechanistic,static,naturalistic,spatializedviewofconsciousness,ittransformsstudentsintoreceivingobjects.Itattemptstocontrolthinkingandaction,leadswomenandmentoadjusttotheworld,andinhibitstheircreativepower.”

ButinAmerica,thepopulationissmallandtherearealotofschoolsthere,thegovernmentsoffereverythingforeducation,sopeoplehavenotheforcesthatcouldnotbeaccepteducation.ThenAmericanparents,theygenerallybelievethatchildren’sgrowthmustrelyontheirownexperiences,theywillofferopportunitiesandhardconditionstolettheirchildrensolvevariousproblemsbythemselves.Throughthetrainingintheearlyage,childrencanobtainthecapacitytoliveindependentlysincetheirchildhood.Theywillknowhowtogetoverdifficultiesandachievetheirpurpose.Thenindailylife,parentsadvocatedemocracysothatchildrencanhavetherighttocomeupwiththeirpersonalideasandthoughts.Parentsandchildrenareequalathome.Theywanttousethewayofcommunicationtounderstandchildren’sfeelingsanddirectthemtosolveproblems.Theimportanceisthatparentshopechildrencanlearnwhattheyneedduringtheprocessofcognitive.Itislikea“Problem-posingeducation,asahumanistandliberatingpraxis,positsasfundamentalthatthepeoplesubjectedtodominationmustfightfortheiremancipation.Tothatend,itenablesteachersandstudentstobecomeSubjectsoftheeducationalprocessbyovercomingauthoritarianismandanalienatingintellectualism;italsoenablespeopletoovercometheirfalseperceptionofreality.Theworld--nolongersomethingtobedescribedwithdeceptivewords--becomestheobjectofthattransformingactionbymenandwomenwhichresultsintheirhumanization.”

Duringtheprocessoffamilyeducation,differentteachingwayproductsdifferenteffect,whichwillinfluenceschildren’spsychologyandgrowingup.

InChina,becauseparentsalwaysaretheauthority,somostofthemarenotgoodatexpressinglove,andappreciationfortheirchildren.Thenthechildrensometimeswillbeconfusedaboutwhethertheyhavedoneagoodjob.Theyevencriticizeorpunishchildrenfortheirshortcomings,andthekidsgraduallyloseconfidenceandhavepsychologicalshadowwhichcouldeasilymakethemrebellious.

However,Americanparentsgivemoreencouragementandsupporttotheirchildrensoastomaketheirchildrenbemoreconfident.Sothechildrencanhaveahappychildhood.Theycancreatetheirownfuture.

Accordingtotheaboveconditions,inmyopinions,Chineseparentsgivetoomuchpressuretotheirchildren,andsometimes,theywillignoretheirchildren’sinterestsandfeelingsthenmakedecisionforthem.Itisharmfulforchildren’sdevelopment.Andlackofcorrectappreciationandtoomuchcriticismmakechildrendepressive.Childrenwillfeeltheyarebirdsincage.

“ItislikeaclipinthemovieTheJoyLuckClub:thedaughterwasverytalentedonplayingpiano,butshedidnotalwaysplayashermother’sorder,shelostherfreedom.Shetoldhermotheraboutthatbuthermotherstillrequiredhertodoitandsaid:thereareonlytwokindsofdaughters,thosewhoareobedientandthosewhofollowtheirownmind!Onlyonekindofdaughtercanliveinthishouse.Obedientdaughter!”

AndAmericanparentsletchildrendowhattheywant,itisgood,butsometimeitwillmaketheoverindulgent.Thatiswhytheteenagecrimeoftencouldbehappened.InradioorTV,wesometimescangetsomeinformationaboutthata15-year-oldboyshothisfriendinthemiddleschool.

Howtomakefamilyeducationbeapositiverole?–“Mr.Taoxingzhihassaidthat:Nolove,noeducation.”Sowecanseethatit’sveryimportantforfamilymemberstoestablishafavorableatmosphereofstudyandlifearoundchildren.Sothatmeansitisnecessarytomakeagoodcommunicationbetweenchildrenandparents.Maybeitisdifficult,suchasBellHookssaying“Itisdifficultformetotalkaboutmyparentsandtheirimpactonmebecausetheyhavealwaysfeltwary,ambivalent,mistrustingofmyintellectualaspirationsevenastheyhavebeencaringandsupportive.”Butifchildrenandparentscanmakeagoodinteractionwitheachothers,itwillbeveryhelpful.“Maintainingconnectionswithfamily
