retirementsavingswiththedemiseofEnronstock.Butmakingsureitneverhappens
againmaynotbepossible,becausethesuddenimpoverishmentofthoseEnron
workersrepresentssomethingevenlargerthanitseems.It'sthelatestturninthe
unwindingofoneofthemostaudaciouspromiseofthe20thcentury.

inthedevelopedworld.Withtheexplosionofwealth,thatbeganinthe19thcenturyit
becamepossibletothinkaboutapossibilitynoonehaddaredtodreambefore.The

intobeingandofferedthepossibility-insomecasesthepromise-oflifetime
employmentplusguaranteedpensions.Thecumulativeeffectwasafundamental
changeinhowmillionsofpeopleapproachedlifeitself,areversalofattitudethat
mostrankasoneofthelargestinhumanhistory.Formillenniatheaverageperson's
stancetowardprovidingforhimselfhadbeen.UltimatelyI'monmyown.Nowit
became,ultimatelyI'llbetakencareof.Theearlyhintsthatthispromisemightbe
brokenonalargescalecameinthe1980s.U.S.businesshadbecomeuncompetitive
globallyandbeganrestructuringmassively,withhugeLayoffc.Thetrendaccelerated
inthe1990sasthebastionsofcorporatewelfarefacedreality.IBMendedit's
no-layoffpolicy.AT&Tfiredthousands,manyofwhomfoundsuchathingsimply
incomprehensible,andafewofwhomkilledthemselves.Theothersupposed
guarantorsofoureconomicsecuritywerealsoindecline.Labour-unionmembership
andpowerfelltotheirlowestlevelsindecades.PresidentClintonsignedahistoric
billscalingbackwelfare.AmericansrealizedthatSocialSecuritywon'tprovidesocial
securityfbranyofus.
Alessvisiblebutequallysignificanttrendaaffectedpensions.Tomakecostseasierto
control,companiesmovedawayfromdefinedbenefitpensionplans,whichobligate
themtopayoutspecifiedamountsyearsinthefuture,todefinecontributionplans,
whichspecifyonlyhowmuchgoesintotheplaytoday.Themostcommontypeof
defined-contributionplanisthe401(k).thesignificanceofthe401(k)isthatitputs
mostoftheresponsibilityfbraperson'seconomicfatebackontheemployee.Within
