globallyandbeganrestructuringmassively,withhugeLayoffc.Thetrendaccelerated

inthe1990sasthebastionsofcorporatewelfarefacedreality.IBMendedit's

no-layoffpolicy.AT&Tfiredthousands,manyofwhomfoundsuchathingsimply

incomprehensible,andafewofwhomkilledthemselves.Theothersupposed

guarantorsofoureconomicsecuritywerealsoindecline.Labour-unionmembership

andpowerfelltotheirlowestlevelsindecades.PresidentClintonsignedahistoric

billscalingbackwelfare.AmericansrealizedthatSocialSecuritywon'tprovidesocial

securityfbranyofus.

Alessvisiblebutequallysignificanttrendaaffectedpensions.Tomakecostseasierto

control,companiesmovedawayfromdefinedbenefitpensionplans,whichobligate

themtopayoutspecifiedamountsyearsinthefuture,todefinecontributionplans,

whichspecifyonlyhowmuchgoesintotheplaytoday.Themostcommontypeof

defined-contributionplanisthe401(k).thesignificanceofthe401(k)isthatitputs

mostoftheresponsibilityfbraperson'seconomicfatebackontheemployee.Within

sold.Second,Enron's401(k)accountswerelockedwhilethecompanychangedplan

administratorsinOctober,whenthestockwasfalling,soemployeescouldnothave

closedtheiraccountsiftheywantedto.

Butbyfarthelargestcauseofthishumantragedyisthatthousandsofemployees

wereheavilyoverweighedinEnronstock.Manyhadplaced100%oftheir401(k)

assetsinthestockratherthaninthe18otherinvestmentoptionstheywereoffered.Of

coursethatwasn'tprudent,butit'swhatsomeofthemdid.

TheEnronemployees”retirementdisasterispartofthelargertrendawayfrom

guaranteedeconomicsecurity.That'swhypreventingsuchathingfromever

happeningagainmaybeimpossible.Thehugeattitudinalshifttoril-be-taken-care-of
