body'sstructure,PETscanscreateimagesofthebodyatwork.WiththePETscans,theteamtrackedthebrainactivity

ofmodernpigeonstoseewhetheritwasdifferentwhenthebirdswereatrestandrightaftertheyflewfor10minutes.

Theyscannedeightbirdsandlookedat26partsofthebrain.Onlythecerebellumshowedsignificantchangesin

activitylevelsbeforeandafterflyingforallthebirds.

Thesefindingsindicatedthattheabilitytollyisconnectedtothecerebellum.Todetermineexactlyhow,the

researchteamneededtofigureoutwhatthecerebellumlookedlikeincreaturesthatwerealivearoundthetimebirds

begantofly.Theystudiedagroupofbird-likedinosaurs,includingawingedspeciescalledArchaeopteryx,whichhad

Theresearcherscouldn'tlookattheactualbrainsbecausethosedisappearedlongago.Buttheycouldlookatthe

dinosaurs'skulls(顱骨),whichonceheldthebrainsandhavebeenfoundinfossilform.Theresearchersstudiedthe

insideoftheskulls,whichshowedthesizeandshapeofthecreatures'brains.

Inthedinosaursthatweredevelopingtheabilitytofly,theteamsawasignificantincreaseinthesizeofthe

cerebellum.Theyalsonotedsignsofincreasedbraincomplexity,likefoldsinthebraintissue.Thesefindings
