TonygaveClaireanewhairstyleandimprovedhermakeup.Ashewasnotallowedtoaccompany
hertotheshops,hewroteoutalistofthingsthathewouldneedforhisworkonthehouse.Claire

Idrewabreath,grippedtheleverandpusheditforwards.Thelaboratorywenthazyaroundme.Myniececameintofetchsomething,maybeherhandkerchief,apparentlywithoutseeingme.Itprobablytookheraminute,buttomeshemovedlikearocket!Ipushedtheleverfurther.Nightcameasifalampwasbeingturnedout,andinanothermomentcametheday.Tomorrownightcame,thenskippedtoday,againandagain,fasterandfasterstill.
Itishardtoexplainthestrangeandunpleasantfeelingoftimetravelling.ItfeltlikeIwasbeingdrivenfastonawindingroad.Asmypacegrewfaster,thewallsofthelaboratoryfellaway,andIwasleftintheopenair.Thesunandmoonlookedasiftheywerebeingthrownacrossthesky,butsoontherewasdivisionbetweennightandday.AroundmeIsawtreesgrowinglikepuffsofsmoke;theygrew,spread,anddiedinmoments.Isawhugebuildingsriseup,thendisappearlikeinadream.Thewholesurfaceoftheearthwasbeingchanged,meltingandflowingbeforemyeyes.IcalculatedthatIwasbeingpushedthroughtimeathundredsofyearsaminute.
Ihadastrongurgetolookattherandomthingsthatwerebeingflashedbeforemyeyes!IhadthoughtabouttheriskofstoppingtheTimeMachinemanytimes.SolongasItravelledatmaximumspeed,itdidn’tmatter.ButifIstoppedandthesamespacewasbeingoccupiedbysomethingelse,wewouldbeforcedtogetherandexplodelikeabomb!Likeanimpatientfool,Ipulledtheleverbackwardshard.Withasuddenjolt,theTimeMachinewasflippedonitsside,andIwasthrownthroughtheair.
Iwasstunnedforamoment,andthenheardthesoundofthunder.Iwassittingintheraininsomemudnexttothemachine.“Afinewelcome,”Isaid,“foramanwhohastravelledthousandsofyearstobehere!”

Ihavealsoreadaboutsomeiconicsites,suchastheSydneyOperaHouseandtheGreatOceanRoad,andanimalslikethecutekoalasandkangaroos.Ican’twaittoseeallofthem!However,asImajorinsocialstudies,I’mmoreinterestedinmeetingpeopleinAustraliaandexperiencingtheirculture,food,andwayoflife.

I’mhereinSydney!SinceIarrived,myfriendhasbroughtmetomyfirstopen-airbarbecueandhasalsosharedmanydifferentbutyummymealswithme,somyfirstimpressionsofAustraliahavebeenallaboutfood!AlotoftypicalAustralianfood,suchastheSundayroast,isoriginallyBritish.Bakeries,fast-foodjoints,butchershops,cafes,andrestaurantseverywhereprovidesomeofthepremierfoodexperiencesintheworld.TheinfluenceofAsiancultures,ontheotherhand,ledtotheintroductionofbeancurdandAsianherbs,alongwithAustralianversionsoffoodsliketheChinese-inspireddimsum.

MyfriendandIhavearrivedinKatherine,atowninAustralia’sNorthernTerritory.We’reheretolearnaboutthelifeandcustomsoftheAborigines,whoarenativetoAustralia.TheAboriginalpopulationmightbesmall,butitsinfluenceisstillvisible.Forexample,“Bondi”in“BondiBeach”isanAboriginalwordmeaning“waterbreakingoverrocks”.
Tosurviveinthisvastlandontheocean,theAborigineshadtobeinclosecontactwithnature.Thisshowsintheirmusic,too,whichcelebratesthenaturalworldandthespiritualworldaroundthem.Mostoftheirmusicalinstrumentsarereallyjuststicksfoundontheground,amongwhichthereisanamazinginstrumentcalledthedidgeridoo.
Thedidgeridooismadefromatreebranchwhichishollow.Toplaythedidgeridoo,youputyourmouthononeendandblowwhilevibratingyourlips.Unlikeahorn,therearenofingerholes.Thedidgeridooplayerhastochangetheshapeofhismouthinordertochangepitch.Askilledplayercanplayforalongtimewithoutstoppingtobreathe.Hedoesthisbycontinuallybreathinginthroughhisnosewhilebreathingoutthroughhismouthandintothedidgeridoo.Itriedtolearnhowtoplayit,butaftertryingforhours,IwasconvincedthatIcouldnevermakeamusicalsoundwiththisinstrument!

It’salmosttimeformetosaygoodbyetoAustralia.I’veenjoyedmytimehereverymuch.Afterbeinghereforawhile,mybiggestimpressionisthecomplicatedmixofpeoplesandculturesthat
makeupthenation.Althoughthemainculturalinfluencesince1788hasbeenWesternculture,minoritycultureshavealsoplayedapartinshapingtheuniqueAustralianculture,withmanyofthenewculturalinfluencescontributedbyimmigrants.ItissaidthatnownearlyhalfofallAustralian

Australiahaslotsofuniqueanimals,butwhichanimalisasymbolofthecountry?

Tradeandcuriosityhaveoftenformedthefoundationofmankind’sgreatestachievements.Tocompletethegreatmapoftheworldwasastrongpassionforthepeopleofearlycivilisations.MarcoPolo’stalesinspiredEuropeanexplorerstosearchforsearoutesfromwesttoeast.However,merchantsandexplorersfromtheEastsetsailfromeasttowestmanyyearsbeforeColumbusfirst
did.
Inancienttimes,silkfromChinafounditswayoverlandtoIndia,theMiddleEast,andRome,alongwhatbecameknownastheSilkRoad.Atradingrouteacrosstheseawasalsoextendedalongthe
coastsoftheIndianOcean,centeredaroundCeylon(nowSriLanka).Here,merchantsfromChinaandmanyotherplacesmettonegotiatetradedeals,whichalsoledtomoreawarenessofeachother’scultures.Overthecenturies,furthertradingallowedmoreexplorationoftheregionstothewestofChina,asrecordedinDuHuan’sRecordofMyTravelsintheeighthcentury.
Later,theMingDynastyfurtherdevelopedrelationswiththeseregions.Between1405and1433,sevenlargefleetssailedwestonvoyagesoftradeandexploration.Thesefleetswereasighttobeholdandwereinaleagueoftheirownatthattime.UnderthecommandofZhengHe,theysetsailfromtheSouthChinaSeaacrosstheIndianOceantothemouthoftheRedSea,andthentotheeastcoast

ofAfrica.Africanroyalfamiliessentgiftssuchasgiraffesasgesturesoffriendshipinreturnforgold,silk,andspices.AlthoughChinawithdrewfromfurtherexpeditionsafter1433,theselandandsearoutesremainedactivechannelsbetweenotherculturesforcenturies.
Toreachoutacrossthesearemainsastrongdesiretoday.TheancientsearoutestravelledbyZhengHearebeingrevisitedwiththe21stCenturyMaritimeSilkRoad,whichispartoftheBeltandRoadInitiative.

Understandingmoreabouttheseawillalsohelpusmanageitsresourcesbetter.Loggingnewspecieswillimproveourunderstandingoflifeontheearth.Itmayhelpusdiscovernewmedicines,aswellasnewsourcesoffoodandenergy.Accessingthedeepoceanmayalsohelpustopredicteventssuchasearthquakes.

SoI’vebeenhereinthejungleforaboutamonthnow.Mysecondaryschoolisabushschool.The
classroomsaremadeofbamboo,withclayfloorsandroofsofgrass.Ittakesmeonlyafewminutestowalktoschooldownadustytrackcoveredinweeds.WhenIreachtheschoolgrounds,I’mgreetedbyachorusof“goodmorning”fromtheboys.Unlikestudentsinourcountry,theseboysdonotwearcottonuniforms,andmanyofthemalsohavetowalkalongway,sometimesforuptotwohours,justtogettoschool.
There’snoelectricity,runningwateroreventextbooks,nottomentionlaptops,tablets,orothermoderndevices!Allthestudentshavearepencils,rubbers,andpaper.I’mstilltryingtoadapttotheseconditions.I’vehadtobecomemuchmoreimaginativeinmyteaching.Scienceismymostchallengingsubjectasmystudentshavenoconceptofdoingexperiments.Thereisnoequipment,andsincethereisn’tevenawashroom,ifIneedwaterIhavetocarryitfrommyhouseinabasin!

LastweekendImademyfirstvisittoaremotevillage,hometooneofourstudents,Tombe.AnotherteacherandIwalkedfortwoandahalfhourstogetthere—first,upamountainfromwherewehadfantasticviews,andthendownashadedpathtothevalleybelow.Whenwearrivedatthevillage,
Tombe’smother,Kiak,sawuscomingandstartedcrying“ieeeieee”.Weshookhandswithallthevillagers.EveryoneseemedtoberelatedtoTombe.
Tombe’sfather,Mukap,amanwithastrongjawandawrinkledforehead,ledustohishouse,alow,roundbamboohutwithnowindows,withadoorjustbigenoughtogetthrough,andwithgrassstickingoutoftheroof—thisshowsitisaman’shouse.Suchhousingisdarkinsidesoittooktime
foroureyestoadjust.FreshgrasshadbeenlaidonthefloorandtherewasaplatformforJennyandmetosleepon.Therewasafireplaceinthecentreofthehut.TheonlypossessionsIcouldseewereonebroom,afewsaucers,akettle,cups,pans,andacoupleofjars.

ButthenIbegantohearabouttheworkshewasdoinginTanzania,acountrythathasmanyhealthproblems,andnowIamsingingadifferenttune.ManydangerousdiseaseswhicharerareinChinaarequitecommonlycontractedinTanzania.And,whilethecountryisquitebeautifulandhasmuchnaturalwealth,manyofthepeoplearequitepoorandlivewithoutthingswetakeforgranted,suchaselectricity,runningwater,carsandgoodtransportsystems,andsupermarkets.Oneprojectthatmymotherworkedonwashelpingtobuildacardiachospital.Priortothis,ifaTanzanianhadaheartconditionandneededsurgery,theywouldhavetogoabroad.Sincethiswasquiteexpensive,manypeoplewentwithoutmedicaltreatmentandsomeevendied.Now,notonlyareTanzanianshelpedbythehospital,butpeopleinneighbouringcountriesarehelpedaswell.Ithasmadeabigdifferencetotheirlives.Mymotheralsodoesacircuitoftheruralvillagestoprovidemedicaltreatment,helpthosewithdisabilities,andprovideconsultationandtrainingforlocaldoctors.Inaddition,herteamhasgivenpatientsanewmalariatreatmentinventedinChina,andthishassavedmanylives.
