UnitedStateshaslargeaquifers,farmers,ranchers,andcitiesaretappingmanyof

example,overpumpinghasshrunkgroundwatersuppliesby25percent,accordingto

Postel.Americansmayfaceevenmoreurgentproblemsfrompollution.Drinking

waterintheUnitedStatesisgenerallysafeandmeetshighstandards.Nevertheless,

oneinfiveAmericanseverydayunknowinglydrinkstapwatercontaminatedwith

bacteriaandchemicalwastes,accordingtotheEnvironmentalProtectionAgency.In

Milwaukee,400,000peoplefellillin1993afterdrinkingtapwatertaintedwith

cryptosporidium(隱抱子蟲),amicrobe(微生物)thatcausesfever,diarrhea(腹瀉)

andvomiting.THESOURCEWheresocontaminantscomefrom?Indeveloping
