Butisteamworkingbeingoverdone?Somemanagersareonasmanyassevenoreightdifferentteams,saysDrCathyBandy,apsychologistwhorecentlyranaconferenceonthesubject.Theytakeupsomuchtimethatmanagerscantgetonwithcoretasks.Formingteamsandhavingmeetingshas,shesays,becomeanendinitself,almostregardlessofpurpose.Thereisalsothedangerofanunhealthydesiretokeeptheteamgoingaftertheworkhasbeendone.Peoplefeeltheneedtobelong,andteammembershipcanprovideakindofpsychologicalsupport.

Theideabehindteamworkingisthat,whentherightgroupofpeopleisbroughttogether,aforcedevelopswhichisgreaterthanthesumoftheirindividualtalents.Thisisoftentrueinsport,wheregoodplayerscanreachunexpectedheightsasmembersofaninternationalteam.However,fewbusinesssituationshaveasclearasetofobjectives,orasclearcriteriaofsuccessorfailure,aswinningamatch.

Inbusiness,everyoneneedstobeclearaboutwhatthechallengeisandwhetherateamistherightwayofapproachingit,saysSteveGardner.Unfortunately,peoplefocusinsteadonwhothemembersoftheteamshouldbeandwhatrolestheyaretoplayDrBandyagrees.Thereisalwaysadangerthatteamscanturnintocommittees,shesays.Inalotofsituations,oneortwoindividualswouldbemuchmoreeffective.
